NSN Moving to Kansas City

The National Storytelling Network, the association of and for storytellers, is moving their headquarters from Jonesboro to Kansas City, Missouri. Two other cities were considered for the move: Chicago and Pittsburgh. The selection committee did exhaustive research and work to find the best location, and a place that would support NSN as an arts organization. Kansas City won the honors and their mayor and city council truly want the organization to be centered there.

This move will not affect the National Storytelling Festival, situated in Jonesboro, TN. The festival is under a separate entity, The International Storytelling Center (ISC), and will remain in Jonesboro.

Logistics for the move and the actual date will be announced soon.

Back to the Beginning

I am teaching The Art of Storytelling at Glendale Community College this semester. I have presented workshops on storytelling and have coached storytellers. But this is a whole other ball of wax!

In preparation for the class, I had to go back and re-read Liz Warren's textbook, The Oral Tradition Today, An Introduction to the Art of Storytelling. All I can say is WOW! Going back to the beginning is amazing! I am finding things and seeing things that I knew were there, in the back of my mind, but were dormant.

The book is laid out in logical, step-by-step chapters, and takes students through the process of finding, preparing and performing stories. I remember reading it for Doug Bland’s class. But I am experiencing it in a whole new way now.

As I give reading assignments and ask the students to respond, I am discovering elements of the craft that I had forgotten, or let fall by the wayside. Now, as I am challenging my students to follow the process and learn the art of storytelling, I must also challenge myself to re-learn, and show by example.

One of the best tips I can give you is to urge you all to go back to this book, or other storytelling books you may have read, but that now sit dusty on the shelf. Now that you have been “out there” telling stories and searching for more venues…the best way to move forward…is to go back to the beginning!

Thanks Liz!

Visioning - Well Worth the Effort

Some of you may be familiar with Zingerman's in Ann Arbor, Michigan. What started out as a small deli has grown by leaps and bounds to a huge, internationally famous culinary conglomerate!  Owner and founder Ari Weinzweig has written about how they start a new division or venture. Every project, every new concept starts with a process of visioning
“A vision, quite simply, is a picture of what success will be at a particular time in the future. It encompasses answers to an array of questions: What does our organization look like? How big is it? What are we famous for?”
Although Ari talks about the process in terms of his business, it is also valid for storytellers to use the process for both stories, and the business of storytelling.

Here’s a link to the article (thanks to Karen Dietz). There’s a step-by-step progression that Ari describes. Follow it, and you are sure to have a clear understanding of your story, project, or yourself as a teller!

P.S. If you need help with this process of visioning, contact storyteller and coach Layne Gneiting. Through his company, Elysian Pro, he can walk you through this progression and help you see all the steps.
