Jonesborough Storytelling Festival
40th Anniversary

The first full weekend in October is the Jonesborough National Storytelling Festival. You can see over 35 tellers in 3 days! I have attended for the last three years and it has been quite an education! Unfortunately, this year is not in the cards for me, but there are other Valley storytellers who are planning to attend this 40th anniversary of the festival. If you are going, send me an E-mail and I will compile a list of the Arizona folks who are attending to see if you want to get together for coffee and sharing. It's always nice to see a familiar face at the festival!

Storytelling in Motion

Our new friend, comedian and storyteller Bryan Lee has an interesting new project called, Storytelling in Motion. He is planning on capturing stories on film...with a cast and a crew to re-create the story as it's being told by the storyteller. There are opportunities to tell your story, or act in the production of other's stories. He needs funding too. Check it out.

One of These Things is Not Like the Others

I recently coached a client who told a story about three sisters. The first two sisters were drawn into a spell and eventually killed. The third sister survived. Why?

There are many stories that have this motif. In the Three Little Pigs, it is the eldest sibling that has the wisdom to build his house out of bricks. In The Magic Pomegranate, it is the youngest brother whose innocence and sense of wonder make him the hero. He believes the Pomegranate has magical powers, so he doesn't eat it; he saves it for the right moment.

It's important for the audience, and the teller, to know "What is different about this character?" What separates him/her from the others? Giving your characters specific traits, virtues or emotions that elevate them and allow them to triumph where others could not adds so much more depth to your story. It should be more than "the third time's a charm" that allows them to conquer evil or cheat death.

Remember, the story is not just about the sequence of events. It's about the emotions underneath, and how the characters (even in a personal story) respond and react that makes us relate to them, and makes the story interesting.

NSN Blog - Another Great Resource
Have you been to the National Storytelling Network website lately? Have you visited their blog? You should! Each week they post a new blog by one of their members. Sometimes it's an article, sometimes it's a recorded story. The blog is a great way to get to know other tellers in the industry. There's always lots of good information in the various blogs. I have found some great stories, and made many new connections by viewing the blog, and then contacting the author...even if it is just say you liked the post.

You don't have to be a member to view the blog - but if you haven't joined NSN, as a storyteller, you should. This is our national organization, and there are many benefits to membership. If you want to know more, go to their website, or contact me, I am the state liaison, I can give you the whole story!
