We are Living in Interesting Times

It's an old Chinese proverb and/or curse, depending on how you look at it, "May you live in interesting times." Here in the Valley of the Sun, we certainly are living in interesting times, and that includes the storytelling community.

One look at the calendar section of this website and you can see what's happening. There are over 40 events from September thru December.

Sean Buvala's StoryRise has started back up in Avondale, listen to the latest podcast of stories.

Liz Warren and friends will be telling at the Celtic Harvest Festival at the end of the month.

Cassie Cushing is not only re-branding her coffee company by incorporating "stories and coffee", but has also set up three concerts in local coffee shops for the month of October. "Coffee, Corpses, and Cauldron's...Oh My!" promises to highlight Cassie's unique style, and her preference for "gritty" stories.

Donald Davis will be here the third week in October for concerts and workshops, followed by Connie Regan-Blake in the first week in November.

Community Christian Church, headed up by our own Doug Bland has Sonoran Stories, The Feast: Tasty Stories, and their annual Winter's Light (don't miss it!) concert coming up.

Let's get out there and listen, learn and support the storytelling and storytellers in our community!

Know When to Fold 'Em

Kenny Rogers sang about it: You got to know when to hold 'em, know when to fold 'em. Knowing when to fold 'em is sometimes a tough choice.

Knowing what to fold, or toss out of a story can be a hard decision. It takes great courage to cut something that you may love. But if it doesn't serve the story, or at least move the story forward, it's usually best to cut it.

There's another aspect to this melodic adage. Know when to toss the story. I recently worked on a story for an upcoming concert. I had spent some time crafting it, and practicing it at home. Then I got the story "up on its feet" in front of some colleagues...whoa! Not what I expected. And I don't mean the reaction of my colleagues, I mean my reaction. I didn't like it. It didn't sit well. I got some good feedback about how I could improve the story, but as I thought more and more about it, I knew it was time to drop the whole story. I looked at my cards and knew that the time was right to fold 'em, at least for this hand, at this table.

Sometimes, no matter what the potential might be, you just can't stretch it into a winning hand. It may be best to fold 'em and walk away, at least for the time being.
