The Storyline and Space 55 present "Heritage" a two-night storytelling show at Space 55 on Friday, September 18th and Saturday, September 19th at 8:00 P.M.
We are looking for a variety of stories that share how your life in the United States is shaped by you or your parents (or even grandparents and great grandparents!) having come here from somewhere else.
"Heritage" will be hosted and curated by Rachel Egboro, a local storyteller and co-producer of The Storyline.
We want to hear from you! If you have a story to tell, see below for some prompts. Once you're inspired, pitch your story by sending a brief synopsis or voice memo to TheStorylineMail@gmail.com.
The selected stories will be workshopped and storytellers must be available on Sundays, September 6th and 13th from 2-4 for rehearsals.
We are accepting pitches until August 22nd and we cannot wait to hear from you!

Shaping compelling narratives is a powerful tool for social, political and personal activism. We are hardwired to tell stories. When charts, graphs and statistics fail to motivate, discover ways that narrative can raise awareness, open new possibilities, change minds, mobilize creative action. In this class, you will discover and create stories that foster a healthier, more just, and sustainable world. Taught by storyteller, pastor, and activist Doug Bland.

Out Of The Box Storytelling Women Storytellers
Saturday, August 29th - 10am - Noon (doors open at 9:30 am)
Anne McDowell has organized another event: Out of the Box Storytelling - Women Storytellers.
A place for Christian women to get together to hear and tell of the wonders that God has done in their lives or (with permission) in the lives of others. This is a fun, exciting new way to hear six 8-10 minute personal, uplifting, faith-promoting stories about the wonders of God, and enjoy a delicious brunch! They offer fun, laughter, and a chance to win door prizes!
It's at Dobson’s Restaurant at Dobson Ranch Golf Course in Mesa from 10am - 12 Noon.
It's an old adage from vaudeville. Never work with (or go on after) animal acts or kid acts. They will upsatge you, or make you forgotten every time!
But there is another side to this admonition...Tell Stories about Animals or Kids and you will grab the hearts of the audience!
These stories can be traditional folktales or fairy tales, maybe some weird, macabre old Irish tales like Cassie Cushing loves to tell. Or just some straight forward stories of kids and their animal friends, (talking or not) that will make the audience smile and remember their own encounters with furry friends.
Take things a step further and reach into your own life (and perhaps childhood) and tell a true story of you and your pets. Or maybe it's about your kids and their pets. Find a compelling story that people can relate to in as many ways as possible. Maybe you didn't have a pet like Lassie who could go get help when you fell down the well, or could even dial 911 when the fire department had to be called to put out the blaze you had set.
But maybe your pet just stayed with you till the end. Maybe you encountered an animal in the wild, who wasn't so wild and you found a way to share some kindness. Maybe, like Androcles, you helped a small animal or set them free. Did they come back to help or rescue you at some point? If it's story-worthy, tell us the tale and astonish us with the miracles of life that we don't often see or hear about. Let your stories come alive with the personifications that create compelling creature characters to care about.
Hell's Bell's - Even Pirates Can Smile - NOW!
I have great news. I am on the mend! The Bell's Palsy is waning and I am getting back feeling and control of the muscles on the left side of my face. For comparison, I have shown three photos below: One that is pre-Bell's; One that was taken three days after the onset; and one that was taken today.
When I was about 19 years old. My favorite Aunt, Meg, had cancer. She had many different types of treatments (that was way back then) and eventually lost all control in the muscles of her face, As a child and family therapist, one of the most disconcerting things to her was the fact that when she met people, especially children, she attempted to smile, but what showed on her face was merely a blank stare. I, too, was quite fearful of this, but as time passes, those I meet seem to not even be aware that there is anything wrong with me.
There is already a weird story in all of this, someday, I may be able to weave it together and share it with the world. Today, just color me smiling!
