Advanced Storytelling Class at GCC This Fall! Glendal Community College Offers Storytelling II Course
I am so happy to announce that this fall I will be teaching an additional class at Glendale Community College! Storytelling II will be offered on Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 5:45 pm to 7:00 pm. This is a second level class and will explore storytelling on a deeper level. We will focus on enhancing telling and language skills, developing repertoires, and defining "who you are" as a teller.

This curated Storytelling event in Tucson is in its 13th year! Six people are invited to tell ten minute, personal stories on a theme in front of an audience. The stories are not read or memorized, they are told from the life experiences and creativity of the teller

It's your first sleepover, your new driver's license, and the food in your refrigerator in your apartment. It's running from a bad relationship, storming out of a toxic job, and leaving the hospital to sit on your front porch. It's getting an electric wheelchair, speeding down the trail on a new bike, and taking the train into the sunset.

"Super Hero Squirrely Shirley - Ready to Save the Wetlands" is an action-packed adventure with Squirrely Shirley taking on the role of SUPER HERO to help her friends who live in riparian zones around the world. Riparian zones are the places where the land meets water, and where hundreds of critters, like frogs, birds, bugs and fish have their homes. At the end of each show, Shirley provides each youngster in the audience with a Junior Riparian Super Hero Kit full of ideas about what they can do to help.

As we review our goals, purpose and the benefits of membership, we are also planning a Backyard Storytelling Celebration and Potluck in a beautiful downtown garden venue from 6:00 to 9 p.m. on Saturday, July 18.

TWO - TWO - TWO TIPS IN ONE!

I am re-posting a video by Sean Buvala from last week regarding Using Microphones. It is spot on!
So, we did a little Periscope video this week on using a microphone. Then, we messed around with it and created this four minutes in (mic) heaven. Just goofing a bit. #storysat
Things are not always what they seem...
And often, that makes for a good story.
I watched the movie of West Side Story this weekend. Some of the dialogue was a bit dated, but it was still a great movie; great songs and dancing! The Broadway musical debuted in 1957, the movie was made in 1961. Based on Romeo and Juliette, set against the backdrop of New York between two rival gangs, the Jets and the Sharks.
Flashback to 1968
In-The-Round Dinner Theatre on the southwest side of Chicago. My first Equity (Actors’ Union) contract. I played Chino, the brother of Bernardo. At the end of the show, I kill Tony, Maria’s lover. Maria was played by my good friend Margie Cohen.
As Tony lies dead in the street, the police lieutenant approaches him. Maria jumps to the ground beside Tony and menacingly shouts, “Don’t you touch him!” With tears in her eyes, she leans forward, kisses Tony and says, “Te adoro, Anton.” (Natalie Wood in the movie clip at right of the last scene)
One night, Margie seemed to be struggling as she knelt beside Tony. She appeared filled with much more emotion than usual. More tears and a pained expression on her face told us all that something was clearly different. Did she hurt her knee when she landed next to him? Did she twist her ankle? It seemed that she was having difficulty bending over to kiss him. In fact, she did NOT bend to him and instead, kissed her hand and then pressed it to his lips. Would she be able to get up and walk off the stage? We all wondered what had happened, and what we might have to do in this situation.
After what seemed like an eternity, where none of us could help, and with a pained expression on her face, Margie grabbed at something near her foot, and then slowly rose. We all continued on as the Jets and the Sharks lifted Tony and carried him off the stage, Margie walking slowly behind us.
Once Margie got offstage, she doubled over and covered her face with her hands. We all gathered around her to comfort and console, and ask her if she was okay; was she hurt; what happened?
She looked up and finally revealed that she was NOT crying, but letting out tears of laughter as she said, “I got the heal of my shoe caught in my underpants and couldn’t move!”
