NSN Conference Highlights

Liz Warren receives the NSN Oracle Award for Service & Leadership in the Western Region. Liz rocked the house with her acceptance speech that acknowledged SMCC Institute, colleague and co-director, Marilyn Omifunke Torres and several other leaders in the storytelling community. A huge ovation was given by the large number of locals in the audience, many of whom came specifically to support and honor Liz for this well deserved award!

It's Real - I Held it in My Hand!

I was on cloud 10 (that's one level higher than cloud nine) with my publisher Ted Parkhurst of Parkhurst Brothers. My new book, Storytelling Tips for Creating Crafting and Telling Stories sold over 35 copies at the conference! I was overwhelmed by the response. So many friends and colleagues bought the book and asked me to sign it.

I am awed by the folks who have endorsed it with unexpected praise like Kim Weitkamp, Jim May, Lyn Ford, Judy Sima, Antonio Sacre, Susanna (Granny Sue) Connelly Holstein, Karen Langford Chace, and Bobby Norfolk. I am certainly blessed to have these colleagues like my book.

Teller-2-Teller Rides High at Conference!

The Teller-2-Teller Connection transportation concept matched incoming attendees to local tellers and students. Everyone was impressed with the ability to be greeted by locals and transported to the hotel with comments and lore about the local environs.

Seventeen local folks provided welcoming, personal transportation to over 65 incoming tellers. Kudos especially go to Laura Rutherford and Liticia Pizzino for doing the yeoman's share of the rides. And extra credit goes to Leticia for checking every outgoing flight and adding exceptional value with more trips back to the airport! Thanks to everyone!

Stress Reduction Through the Hero's Journey

Giving long-time teller Angela Lloyd a ride to the hotel provided me a real chance to get to know her. I had seen her several times at Jonesborough and other conferences, but this was the first chance I had to spend some quality time with her.

The subject of the Hero's Journey emerged, and Angela had a quite unique take on it.

Whenever I am in a new situation where I am not familiar with what's going on and I might get stressed out, I think of the Hero's Journey. I put my trust in the process that I will find a helper or gain the magic knowledge that I will need to survive."

What a great way to look at life! Another way that story provides us with what we need in the moment!
