Four Weeks until the Fall Semester

Storytelling II Course

My Storytelling I classes at GCC are full BUT -- I am so happy to announce that this fall I will be teaching an additional class at Glendale Community College! Storytelling II will be offered on Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 5:45 pm to 7:00 pm. This is a second level class and will explore storytelling on a deeper level. We will focus on enhancing telling and language skills, developing repertoires, and defining "who you are" as a teller.

I hope you can join us for this class - you'll get 3 credits too! Contact me for more info.

Call for Storytellers at ANLC

Ruth Shaw's daughter Nancy Shaw Wilkinson is now the Assistant Principal at Arcadia Neighborhood Learning Center. She is looking for storytellers to visit classes and share stories with their wonderfully creative students.

The school is one of the most progressive schools in the Valley, open for pre-school through 8th grade. I spent two years telling stories to Nan's class almost every week. It was a GREAT GIG, and one of the best times in my life! Now, as Assistant Principal, Nan wants to bring more storytellers to more classes and students.

The school is at 62nd Street just south of Camelback in Scottsdale. If you are interested in any way, contact Ruth at rshaw38@cox.net.

Good Advice from a Crotchety Old Father

In Shakespeare's Hamlet, Poloius has the best advice for his son, Laertes, but it also fits for storytellers. "This above all else - To thine own self be true."

The reality is that it's hard to NOT be yourself. Often, storytellers try to be different from who they are. Sometimes they even try to be like other storytellers they have seen, or even admire. In the end, you will only become a weak imitation of someone else.

Rather than trying to emulate another teller, try to enhance and underscore who you are. Think about what techniques that teller has used to mold them into who they are. How have they gone about refining their storytelling personae? What are their likes and dislikes? What stories do they LOVE (the first rule of storytelling)? What makes them unique?

Then, ask yourself the same questions. How can you zone in on the YOU that is a storyteller? How can you best show that to your audience? How can you be true to yourself, true to the story and true to your audience, all at the same time? Isn't that the ultimate goal of a storyteller?

Jonesborough Guild on a Storytelling Adventure!
Seven members of the Jonesborough Storytelling Guild have set off on a great adventure! These seven friends and storytellers have planned a "road trip" from Jonesborough, Tennessee to Kansas City Missouri. Their destination is the NSN Storytelling Conference, but their trek is much more than a point-to-point journey!

They have given countless hours of their time to raise funds for the trip and will be giving five extra days to travel through four states telling stories at 13 venues (at least). This is a dream mission for them - to take the good news about Jonesborough and our whole area on the road - to plant story seeds - to tell stories to and gather stories from many who have rarely had the opportunity to tell or hear stories.

Six of the tellers are pictured here: Saundra Kelley, Jeff Stratton, Linda Poland, David Claunch, Libby Tipton, and Delanna Reed.
