Seaglass Storytelling is a new workshop from long-time Valley teller/coach Sean Buvala.

A workshop on using the unique light of a folktale to improve our personal stories.

The workshop explores the "Three Refractions" and the shadow sides of personal tales. There will be time to work on one's own tale in a small group. Like rare sea glass, the best personal stories are intentionally constructed stories that have the long-term impact of the world tale.

Youth Story Journey Workshop
Saturday, June 20, 2015  10:00am - 11:30am

MARK YOUR CALENDARS
You don't have to go to NSN in Kansas City this summer to discover the value of the Hero's Journey in creating inter-generational communities where youth thrive.

Experience the story-based process Harriet Cole uses when working with the Boys and Girls Club of Metro Phoenix right here in Phoenix during her preview of her NSN Conference workshop.

This is a way to empower youth to become the here's of their own journeys. Spend a morning learning the activities that will set the youth in your world on the path to increased presentation skills, confidence, and self-esteem.

If You're Not Irish - Forget About It!

Or Jewish, or French, or Italian...or any other nationality that is not YOU!

Storytellers generally agree: If you ain't got it, don't use it - accents, that is.

Accents are difficult. Unless you come from a specific culture, you shouldn't use them. In Liz Warren's The Oral Tradition Today: An Introduction to the Art of Storytelling, she cautions,

"It's risky and can easily end in failure and offense. Here is the bottom line: only use an accent or a dialect if it is one that you have mastered and you know you can use with integrity and without causing offense."

Even most actors have a hard time with accents. If you look at the credits at the end of any movie where an actor uses an accent, you will always see a dialect coach listed.

Liz Weir has said that, "You really can't affect an Irish accent, as they change geographically every fifteen miles!"

Two years ago I was in Dublin, buying a ticket on the ferry to England. I stopped a man at the station to get some information and clarification about where to board. He knew immediately that I was from America (duh) and we chatted for a bit. Before parting, I said something to him, trying to use what I thought was an Irish accent. He turned to me, screwed up his face, looked me right in the eye and said, "That's the WORST Irish accent I have ever heard!"

'Nuff said.

Another Summer O' The Green!
Liz Warren is already across the pond and has started her annual, Study Abroad Ireland. Students come from all over to study the Irish Storytelling Tradition during the summer.

This year, Phoenix teller Dixie Walljasper (who took this selfie of her and Liz Warren on the right) has made the trek and will be learning from the best - Liz Warren, Liz Weir, and so many other great Irish tellers who make their homes on the emerald isle!

Make sure to check out Liz's Ireland blog - http://irelandjournal.typepad.com. Each year, it not only becomes a great "travelblog" but always serves as a compendium of wonderful stories, tellers and tips for telling tales from the land where it rains almost every day. If it didn't, it wouldn't be that green!
