Beyond My Wildest Dreams! Friends and colleagues, I am happy to announce that I have been invited to tell at Beyond the Borders Storytelling Festival in Wales! I never thought something like this could happen, but apparently, they heard of me and have invited me to tell! I am so excited. This will be a grand trip and accomplishment!
I am preparing something special for this event. All of you know that at most festivals, they have several tents/venues and the Tellers rotate from one venue to the next, telling different stories. Naturally, the audiences pick and choose which venue they want to go to for any given time slot. I have decided that I will tell do an ALL-DAY story in just ONE venue. This way, the audience will stay where they are and not have to walk back and forth to other venues. Stay in ONE place and listen to me all day long.
This will allow me to tell many personal stories from my life... from when I was the tiniest of tots (I was so cute) to just last month (yes, a span of 70 years!). I have been waiting for an opportunity like this ever since I started learning storytelling.
Just one hitch - I need to raise $500 in order to pay for my UK Work Permit. I am stating a Go Fund Me account and I am asking all my friends and colleagues to help out. If everybody commits to even a few dollars, I should be able to fund this and perform at the Festival. PLEASE HELP ME OUT!

April 6th 9:30-11:30 a.m. is an opportunity to learn from Master Storyteller, Joe Hayes when he delivers a special workshop, "Tell Me a Cuento: Storytelling of Southwestern Folklore," at Unscrewed Theater, 4500 E Speedway. Joe will share his wisdom and the techniques that have made him so successful as a bilingual storyteller. This workshop is FREE to TOT members, and guests are asked to make a donation to help defray meeting costs.

In this workshop, we will explore the sonic aspects of poetry — and how playing with sound textures and punctuation can make our writing sing. We will look at rich examples from various styles of poetry, and then begin composing our own work based on various prompts.

Shame on Me for Not Turning it Into a Story
You know that old adage: "Fool me once, shame on you... Fool me twice, shame on me!"
Well, it's really, "Fool me once, I should turn this into a story!"
Self-deprecating (make sure you spell and pronounce that correctly) stories can be of great value. Stories where you are fooled or become the butt of a joke AND you show you can take it act as great demonstrations of strong character.
These types of stories are especially effective in business settings. But wait, you are thinking that you don't want to show your employees that you are a fool. Just the opposite (well, not a fool so much as that you can be foolish). The leader who can make fun of herself/himself and show that she/he is human can gain respect and admiration from her/his employees.
I tell my story of being duped by the other dancers in a show I did where I was the only one with one black shoe and one brown shoe on stage. This story shows that I could laugh at myself, and that I could change. It shows that I am vulnerable and human.
That's how I would want people to see me.
Since today is April Fool's Day, think of a time you were fooled. Think of a time someone played a joke on you. Could you take it? Were you able to laugh it off?
