Four Years and Counting!

Today marks the 200th issue of this Newsletter!

I began four years ago on May 1st, 2012. Perhaps I was a little crazy, when I began, wondering just how it would turn out. Clearly, I am even MORE crazy after four years of rising early every Monday morning and wondering, "What will I write about today?"

One thing I continue to "re-learn" from storytelling and doing the Newsletter is to "Trust the process." Some mornings, when I sit down at my computer and begin, I don't have a clue. Eventually, as I fill in the news of valley storytelling events and scour my mind, I somehow come up with a "Tip" for the Newsletter.

Fortunately, this resulted in writing and publishing my book, Storytelling Tips: Creating, Crafting and Telling Stories. I have been quite blessed with the positive reaction from the storytelling community, and certainly many of my most cherished colleagues who have praised the book.

Often, folks will thank me for publishing this newsletter or comment on a Tip or Tdbit. Sometimes, even they wonder how I continue to grind it out each week. The simple answer is, I LOVE STORYTELLING! I love telling, listening, teaching and writing about storytelling. That's what keeps me going.

There is, perhaps, a more deep-seated reason underneath my single-minded storytelling life. Although I have been in the storytelling community for about seven years now, the roots of what drives me, what has molded me, what seemingly pushes me onward is something that I have owned for many years.

It is something that, although I have seen in a few others, I believe I wear it more proudly, as an expert and a master in a little known, but recognizable affliction known as: Witzelsucht! The definition, from the Medical Dictionary of Psychiatry is at the right. If you have spent any time with me, I am sure you will verify this diagnosis.

But seriously folks, if you read this Newsletter, like it, look forward to it, or have any suggestions about it, please click this link and leave a COMMENT below to let me know how you feel.

Thanks for all your support and encouragement!

Focus on an Image

We've all had that moment: We just can't think of a story. When a topic for a slam or story circle comes up, we freeze. For some reason, we just can't think of a time or a place or anything related to the "theme" that we might tell a story about. We're thinking too hard, and not about the right thing.

Here's a tip/prompt for finding a story that I recently learned from Liz Warren.

In the past two months, I have attended the Journeys Workshops: Storytelling Out Loud facilitated by Liz Warren. The first was on Family Stories, the second, held last Saturday was on stories of Love and Friendship. In these workshops, Liz would start out by telliing a personal story. Then, she would ask us to "Focus in on an image from that story that stood out for you." Then she would prompt us to "Think of something in your own life related to that image."

What a brilliant prompt this was!

Later, she would provide us with a list of prompts that might help us remember, "A time when..." But that first direction helped us all focus on images

Storytelling is all about images, and all about the connections we make with our audience. How brilliant is it to have us relate to an image and then craft a story (or even a short anecdote) that connects with that. Most of us have experienced that same scenario when we have told a story. An audience member or colleague comes up to us and says, "Your story reminded me of ..." And then they tell you their story!

So the next time you are having difficulty coming up with a story in a particular genre, go listen to someone telling a story in that same genre. Then focus in on an image from their story... and how/where you can relate it in your own life.

Now you have a starting place for your story. As always... NOW the work begins!

And Speaking of the Journeys Storytelling Workshops...
There are currently two more Journeys Workshopd scheduled.

Liz Warren will be doing a workshop on Stories of Adventure on March 19th.

Mark Goldman will be doing a workshop on April 16th on
Beyond the Bones: Finding Creative Language for Your Story.

The sessions are held at the Shadow Rock Whole Life Center.

And several of the participants will be telling stories on April 1st. Come hear tales, some true, some tall, from friends both familiar and new. Storytellers will include folks from our monthly workshops - as well as others in the Valley storytelling community. It'll be a night all about family, friendship, love, and adventure.

Friday, April 1 at 7 pm in Smith Hall. $10
