Phoenix Phabulous Experience

Wednesday - December 11th
Storytellers and OPEN MIC

On December 11 in Downtown Phoenix, storytellers will gather to share their personal connections to major Phoenix time periods at an open mic event designed to help local artists create the first, comprehensive Phoenix history mural.

The public is invited to join celebrity storytellers Bob Boze Bell, Jana Bommersbach, Frank Barrios and Marshall Shore at the Phoenix Phabulous Storytelling Showcase at Phoenix Center for the arts. Doors open at 5:30 p.m. with open mic hosted for live storytelling from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Admission is free and space is limited to the first 200 attendees.

Audience participants are invited to share three-minute, personal stories connected to life in Phoenix, focused on one of the several Phoenix time periods. Top storytellers will be selected by a panel of listeners and invited by The Arizona Republic to speak at an Arizona Storytellers Project event in 2014 when the community mural is installed in Downtown Phoenix.

No West Side Storytellers

Due to the holidays, there will be NO open meeting of the West Side Storytellers this weekend,

Phoenix Festival of the Arts

Friday - Saturday - Sunday - December 12-15th
There will be many performers, artwork, singers, music and lots of family activities all weekend-long.

Sunday - December 15th 3-4 PM
Indoor Classroom (301)
Mark Goldman (aka StorytellerMark) creates a place for storytelling, and then creates a new place in your imagination with each story he tells. It could be a small village in Russia where a young girl is accused of “stealing” smells; or a hillside on a green planet, visited by a race of giants. It might be a castle in Bavaria where clever wives stand by their husbands in a siege; or a court in the Middle East, where a young boy is asked to assist the Caliph in judging a case.

Each time and place that is visited in a story is discussed with the listeners – what did they hear, what did they see, what would they do if they were in that space? Before the program is finished, the audience decides the final time and place that they will create and explore, and what the outcome will be in a spontaneous, group improvisational story, created on the spot!

Sunday - December 15th 12-1 PM
Indoor Classroom (301)
Workshop: Playing With Local Stories
Caleb Winebrenner

Come for an hour of interactive storytelling from the different cultures and traditions that make up the Valley of the Sun.

Story-Circle at the Humanities Booth (Sunday 2-3pm)
Sometimes a short, quick story is best. Come by the Humanities booth from 2-3 on Sunday to hear why Phoenix got its name, why dogs sniff tails, why saguaros grow on the South Side of a hill, and other fun stories and games. There may be singing.

What's This World Coming To? Great Personal Stories!

Have you had those moments in life that perplex you? Those instances where you scratch your head and think, "What's this world coming to?" Do you have them often? Have you had a lot of them? Time to write them down and craft a story!

Yesterday I went to a local "bakery cafe" and ordered my favorite sandwich: Turkey with cranberry on dark molasses bread. Mmmm. The order taker was apologetic as he informed me, "I'm sorry, we are out of the dark bread, would you mind if we substituted wheat bread?" I had little choice, so I agreed. I grabbed the bagged sandwich with it’s requisite chocolate chip cookie included, and headed for my sister’s house to join my two siblings for dinner.

I waited patiently for some time as they each finished some chores and then prepared their own dinners. We all sat down. I unwrapped the crinkly brown paper holding together the usually messy but marvelous fare, only to discover that, indeed, it had wheat bread, lettuce, tomatoes, cranberry sauce – but no turkey! What’s this world coming to?

I was less incredulous as to the fact that I would have no turkey for dinner, as I was to the realization that someone had actually MADE this sandwich and had FORGOTTEN to put in the main ingredient!

Perhaps I should have known better. I remembered several other times when similar deficits have puzzled my very logical brain. My friend and I had once gone to DQ and were told that they were “out of ice cream.” What? Out of the ONE THING that you sell? Another time, the same friend and I had a taste for succulent, barbecued, baby backs, and we headed to the nearest Tony Roma’s to get down and messy with a couple of full racks. Can you take a guess? That’s right, no ribs! I believe in our shock and horror, we must have asked half a dozen times, “How can you be out of ribs? That’s all you do!

If you’ve got a bunch of those “What’s this world coming to?” moments, it’s time to string them together to form a story that I’m sure many can relate to!

Sad news this week about the passing of Nelson Mandela, one of the greatest men of our time. His own life stories are filled with inspiration for all.

Colleagues Michael D. McCarty and Susan O'halloran of Stories Connect Us All remind us that tomorrow marks Human RIghts Day and the 20th anniversary of the formation of the High Commission for Human Rights. This is the day the UN adopted the Universal Declaration of Human Rights Have you read it? How closely do you think your country follows it? http://www.un.org/en/documents/udhr/
