There are just TWO MORE Two-Saturday courses coming up at SMCC Storytelling Institute:
Storytelling in Interpretive Settings (STO289AD): 10/31/2015 & 11/07/2015
Take two Saturdays to learn the basics of storytelling in an interpretive setting – including how to assess the story potential of your site, and then to craft and tell stories that will engage your visitors deeply. Museums, parks, and gardens are where we collect, preserve, and share the objects, organisms, and places that we value most as a society. While some of the visitors may come for the facts, most want to hear the story behind the object: they want to hear why it matters! Storytelling is the key to creating meaning in context. Taught by Storytelling Institute Director, Liz Warren.
Storytelling in Business Settings (STO289AB): 11/14/2015 & 11/21/2015
The ability to craft and tell stories is an essential in the toolkit of every business person, entrepreneur, and leader. Storytelling is the current buzzword in advertising, and entrepreneurial circles because of its power to engage and inform listeners and clients. In this class you will learn the basics of finding, crafting and telling stories and then adapting them to meet a range of applications. Taught by Storytelling Institute Director, Liz Warren.
These are 1-credit classes that pack a lot of information into two days! The fees are VERY affordable at just under $100. To register, call the registration office at SMCC - 602.243.8330

South Mountain Storytelling - TELLABRATION!™ Friday, November 20, 2015 - 6:30pm - 8:30pm
Another "Celebration" of storytelling. Join South Mountain Storytelling Institute Faculty and Students for a great night of storytelling.
This is a TELLABRATION!™ event (see Tidbits below) and another great happening in a series of storytelling gatherings to celebrate the 20th Anniversary of the South Mountain Community College Storytelling Institute!
This month, I presented my Ebb and Flow of a Story workshop in both Tucson and Phoenix. I will present it at least one more time at the Glendale Tellabration!™ (see listing above) on November 14th. Here is the main tip from the session.
I am a whitewater kayaker. When I first started to learn kayaking, my instructor said, "Anyone can 'bomb' down the center of a river and make it to the end of the run. But if you want to do it with finesse, you can use the ebb and flow of the river, the curves, the rocks, the eddys and the water itself to maneuver the kayak and make it a more interesting and enjoyable experience"
In the same sense, one can tell a story from beginning to end by merely relating the sequence of events. "This happened, then this happened, then this happened, ..." A more creative way to tell a story is to use the plot, the characters, their emotions, YOUR emotions, and the essence of the story itself (the 'main stream') to relate what you want the audience to know and feel.
When do you slow down? When do you speed up? When do you pause, take breath, look to the side, look back, look ahead? How do you deftly maneuver the audience to experience the ebb and flow of the story, and the ebb and flow of their emotions?
You can examine this process by placing sticky notes on the wall to represent scenes, characters, objects, and even music, poetry or famous quotes. Start with the events of the story in chronological order. Then ask yourself, "What if?" questions. What if I reversed the order? What if I started with a different character? What if I told the story in flashbacks? What if I used music or poetry?
Using the metaphor of a river, and using sticky notes to "map out" the flow of your story can assist in viewing it from a different perspective. You can then make conscious decisions about how you want to tell the story, or even run the rapid!
Happy Birthday Laura Packer (tomorrow)
Tomorrow, October 27th, is the birthday of my friend, colleague, storyteller, coach, consultant, real-time dreamer and writer Laura Packer.
I first heard Laura on the radio in an interview about the work she does with organizations, helping them use story. I liked what I heard! When the NSN Board decided to come to Phoenix for their meeting, I called Laura and asked her to come a day early and do a workshop. Her session on improv in storytelling taught me much about the craft. To this day, I constantly tell my students, and remind myself to, "Use and trust your image engine."
It is hard to believe we have only known each other for just over three and a half years. It feels like a lifetime of friendship, and it has become just that. She has the ability to be fully present with you, hold you in the palm of her hand and let you know that she truly cares.
Laura is a great writer too. Her blog, True Stories, Honest Lies is a compendium of thoughts about life, storytelling, and the life of a storyteller.
Laura also writes about grief. In the beginning of 2012, she unexpectedly lost her husband to cancer. She has written extensively about the difficult journey she has been on since that time. Her posts are poignant and sometimes shocking, but most of all they are real, and as authentic as Laura is herself. She shares the gamut of emotions that she has experienced and in turn, gives some comfort to those who may have or will go through similar loss. They are a must-read for those attempting to understand a life condition that is albeit impossible to understand.
So, Happy Birthday to you, Laura; Storyteller extraordinaire, Coach, Teacher, Consultant, Real-Time Dreamer, and one whom I am honored to call "Life-Long Friend!"
