Rabbit, Rabbit, Rabbit!

Did you know. . .There is an old superstition which states that a person should say or repeat the word "rabbit" or "rabbits", three times, out loud upon waking on the first day of the month, to ensure good luck for the duration of that month. After saying "Rabbit, rabbit, rabbit" this morning, you might also want to say, "Story, story, story!"

This month is packed with storytelling events! Check out the calendar section for concerts and workshops with Donald Davis, coaching workshops with Sean Buvala and four "spooky" concerts with Cassie Cushing. Oh yeah, and if you like to paddle (on the water that is) I will be doing two Halloween Moonlight Paddle and Stories on Tempe Town Lake at the end of the month.

Autumn is upon us. . .and so are stories. . .stories. . .stories!

Stories Abound. . .Just Look Around!

Having difficulty coming up with material for a personal story? Look around. Don't just stare at the wall, see what's there.

While moving my 92 year-old mother to a new apartment this weekend, I took photos of all the pictures on her walls so we could put them up in the new place with the same groupings. As I mounted all the artwork in the new place, I began to think about each piece and where it came from, who was the artist, where was that picture taken, when was that poem written. With each one, a flood of memories came back to me. Then I realized, there were stories behind each one of those pictures.

Stories abound all around us, if we just see them. Look around your house or apartment. What do you see? Look back on each object. If you look closely enough...there's a story there.

Picture it. . .picture it. . .picture it!

Storytellers' Database - Planning and Tracking Your Stories
I thought this would be a good time to revisit the Storytellers' Database website.

When I began to tell stories, I was telling at so many different places that, often, I couldn't remember what story I told at what venue, and when. I needed and wanted a system to keep track of all my stories, and when and where I told them. I developed a database program to accomplish that task. I created it ONLINE so I could access it from any computer with an Internet connection. Then I decided to share it with the storytelling community!

The purpose is to provide storytellers with:
     - A method of compiling and tracking stories
     - The ability to track dates and places (and fees) where they have told
     - The ability to plan a program of stories

At the begining of this year, I revamped the entire system, made it easier to use and added video tutorials. You can watch the short videos, and be up and running in twenty minutes or less.

If you are a seasoned teller, you most likely have your own method of keeping track of all your gigs and stories. But for new tellers or students, I think this is the perfect solution. Liz Warren, Director of the Stroytelling Institute at South Mountain Community College in Phoenix, Arizona highly recommends it to all her students.

Oh yeah. . . and by the way. . .IT'S FREE. . .FREE. . .FREE!
