2013 Off to a Great Start!

The year is already off to a great start, with storytelling in the Valley of the Sun (although I am not sure we can call it that with temperatues in the 30s & 40s!) There are over sixteen events in January alone! This bodes well for the impending year.

Last night's "First Responders" concert at Community Christian Church highlighted police, EMTs, CPS workers and emergency helpers in Haiti. All the stories reminded us of the importance of these folks, and the great service they provide to those in need. Doug Bland keeps topping himself with new and intersting themes. Upcoming concerts are "Wardrobe Malfuntions", "The Holy Fool" and "Going Native". Don't miss these wonderful concerts at a great venue!

Long-time local tellers are back in the swing with Joyce Story performing her original tales of the desert, and Sean Buvala presenting advanced coaching workshops, and the new Small-Biz Story Slam.

Classes start this week at South Mountain Community College Storytelling Institute. There is still time to register for some classes. And next month, the instutue is presenting Connie Regan-Blake, who has been telling professionally for over 40 years. Don't miss this week-long schedule of workshops and performances (details coming soon to the Calendar section).

Be on the Lookout - Stories Are Everywhere

I am a people watcher. I love to observe people in their "natural habitat" doing what they do; whether at the grocery store, airport, in a shopping mall, wherever! It's kind of like your own, personal, "Candid Camera." If you watch long enough, you will see and hear people exhibiting both strange and amazing behaviors. And you just might see something that could turn into an anecdote, a "snippet" of a story, an intro into a story or even a full-blown slam-pleaser!

You never know when a story might come along. So you always need to be ready and pay attention to the possibilities.

  • Standing in line at the grocery store
  • Waiting in the dentist's or doctor's office
  • Watching couples or families at the airport
  • That sales person who is trying to get you to buy
  • The tech support worker apologizing for the umpteenth time
  • A chance encounter with your "ex".

Any of these and more can be small anecdotes that might turn into full-scale stories. But you have to be hyper-vigilante in order to find incredible stories.
