What A World!

Birthdays and friends come and go!

Last week I posted about two colleagues, Kristin Pedimonti and Rives Collins, whose "shared" birthdays were yesterday, September 3rd. I mentioned someone ELSE whose birthday was the 3rd too, but no one e-mailed me to guess that it was ME! Oh well, I guess I will have to come up with another contest to see who might win an hour of coaching with me.

Now here's a small tidbit/anecdote from my life. One more person I knew had their birthday on September 3rd. When I moved to Los Angeles many years ago, I stayed with one of my best friends there. He introduced me to one of his friends named Grayson. We discovered that Grayson and I were born on September 3rd, exactly ten years apart! We celebrated many birthdays together until he passed away, several years ago.

It was just a few years ago, on one of my many visits back to L.A., that Grayson mentioned that he had discovered something I might be interested in - Storytelling. I pooh-poohed it off as "reading to kids" and although he tried to get through to me, for some strange reason, I totally dismissed it. It wasn't until a few years later that I "found" storytelling myself here in Phoenix. And then, just after Grayson's death, I discovered, at the NSN Conference in L.A., that Michael D. McCarty had known Grayson! We spent some time sharing stories and memories about Grayson. What a strange world!

Nuance Over Novelty

What an interesting phrase: "Nuance over novelty." I heard it on NPR last weekend. It means simply

To choose something you already poses and make small changes to it vs. choosing something completely different or new.

Storytellers are always trying to find new stories to increase their repertoire. This is a good thing to do. But, sometimes it is also good to go back and look at an old "stock" story you may have, and see what subtle changes you might make to it and see what happens. You may even find a way to tweak an old story that might connect to a new one.
