The SMCC Storytelling Institute presents

"Writing as a Second Language" - With Master Storyteller, Donald Davis

Saturday, October 18th, 9:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.

"Writing as a Second Language" is for anyone who loves story and is fascinated by the connections between the spoken and written word.

Teachers, parents, storytellers and writers will all benefit from the day.

Donald Davis' emphasis in the workshop will be on the whole oral and kinesthetic package which is our spoken language. Davis will teach that we must step back into our familiar first language – the spoken word – as our creative medium and learn to "translate" into that new language called writing. Years of experience has shown him, and the teachers he works with, that oral language and storytelling

are the keys to success in written language.

Odyssey Storytelling in Tucson

“Peer Pressure”

Stories about running with the herd and landing with the lemmings. Tales of the blind leading the blind and the brazenly stupid goading the under-confident. Admit it--even you would drink the Kool-Aid if the whole cult chanted, "chug, chug, chug." Come hear from some survivors who kept up with the cool kids...and lived to tell about it.

Greek & Roman Myth Throw Down

PREPARE YOURSELVES - PREPARE YOUR STORIES
Gods and Goddesses, Titans, love, infidelity, monster offspring, anger, wrath, revenge, and sometimes a bit of magic!

Be part of the fun! Join everyone at South Mountain Community College as twenty-six storytelling students from the many Community College storytelling classes in Maricopa County share their three-minute versions of Greek and Roman Myths. The audience will vote on the best stories.

Then, on Monday, October 6th, the top seven will tell their full versions for Myth Informed Classic Moves.

Practice Sense Memory

That old adage of, "Stop and smell the roses" has real meaning for storytellers. It's just ONE of the exercises we must do, observe and fix in our memory as often as we can. We must practice sense memory.

If we are to paint a picture for our audiences to see in their imaginations, we must find a way to practice and then recall those specific senses that we experience. In storytelling (as in all things) practice makes better (not perfect).

Merely “breathing in” won’t show the audience your ability to “almost make a meal” out of the smells of the bakery; or even detect the sweat and body odor of the baker who comes to hug you after a hot day in the sweltering kitchen.

Take time to practice (and remember).

Feel the cool autumn breeze on your cheek
Feel the sticky summer heat on the back of your neck
Taste the sweetness of fresh mint leaves
Taste the sour crunch of braised red cabbage
See the soft morning dew glistening on the grass and flowers
See the rain as it crashes in torrents on the street and turns to floods
Hear the deep sounds of an oboe playing a melodic tune
Hear the constant wail of the feral cat prowling the night
Smell the sugar and cinnamon of the bakery
Smell the odor of the peroxide that promises to lighten your hair

Take in and experience all that your senses reveal to you. Commit them to your memory, your sense memory.

Then find the right words, gestures, facial expressions, body movements and voice to describe them to your audience. Transfer your sense memory to their senses. Allow them to see, hear, feel, taste and touch what you have. That is when your story comes alive!

School's Answering Machine Tells it Like It Is!
If you teach - you will love this. My friend Carl (who is also a teacher at a Community College) came across this post from an Australian school in response to parents attempting to sue the school. This was back in 2009, but I think "down-under" got it right! (Obviously, not all parents fit into this cataegory...but if the shoe fits...)
