CBS Sunday Morning Highlights Storytelling

Yesterday, Sunday Morning on CBS aired this segment on storytelling, Featuring Margaret Read McDonald, Storytelling Festivals, Donald Davis and the Moth. A well done piece that, I believe, exemplified the state of storytelling today. We should all be thankful that our passion and profession got seven minutes of national air time! SMCC Faculty Concert Kicks Off Four Months of Events
The summer has been hot, and storytelling took a back burner to vacations and the Olympics. But fall is here, and there are a raft of storytelling events from now until the end of the year!

Wednesday's SMCC Storytelling Institute Faculty Concert starts at 7:00 pm in the Performance Hall at the Community College. The theme is "Real Stories." Institute Director Liz Warren says, "All stories are Real Stories – whether a folktale, a myth, a piece of history, or a personal experience. Real stories help us connect to each other, to our time and place, and to the beauty and complexity of life."

The concert features Doug Bland, Harriet Cole, Kelly Davis, Penny Morningstar, Marilyn Torres, Liz Warren, and Sulé Greg Wilson.

This concert kicks off over 35 storytelling events in the next four months...and more will be added as time goes on. We have a new CALENDAR FORMAT on this site that shows all events in true calendar mode. The events are separated into four categories and are color-coded for easy recognition:
CONCERT-Community/Pro/Am - CONCERT-Professional - OPPORTUNITY to Tell - WORKSHOPS

Check out the CALENDAR section of the website for more info.

I'm in Love with These Two Women
These two women have great stories!

Sarah Kay   Maggie Doyne
I've posted about Sarah before, but this bears repeating. When she was in high school, Sarah started Project V.O.I.C.E. (Vocal Outreach Into Creative Expression), celebrating and inspiring youth self-expression through Spoken Word Poetry. She is a Spoken Word artist who has presented at the prestigious TED conference.   At age 18, Maggie Doyne went backpacking and ended up in Nepal. She saw a need to provide food, shelter and education to children there. With $5000 she had saved from babysitting, she bought land in Nepal, raised another $20K in donations, and then got a $100k grant. Now, at age 26, she runs the Kopila Valley School and is the legal guardian for over 40 children. Quite awe inspiring!

It was recently announced that Sarah Kay will be visiting Maggie Doyne's school this fall to teach poetry.
