Let The Storytelling Begin!

There are TONS of storytelling events starting up this month and continuing through the fall here in Arizona! From guild meetings to community concerts like the AZ Republic Live Storytelling to Tucson's Odyssey Storytelling to Sean Buvala's west side Gangplank events and more, there are tales to be told and heard.

Concerts and workshops too when Master Teller, Donald Davis is in town from October 13th to the 20th. You can't go wrong when attending either a concert or a fantastic, informative workshop presented by this "Granddaddy" of storytelling. Sponsored by the South Mountain Community College Storytelling Center. these events will be very popular and sell out quickly! (More details coming soon.)

Got a Greek or Roman myth you want to tell? Have you re-crafted it with twists and turns and even some modern or quirky updates? Then the Greek and Roman Myth Throwdown is for you! Compete with other valley storytelling students and you could be one of the Top Ten to tell in the Big Theatre!

And the world-wide Tellebration event is scheduled for Friday, November 21st. YOU could be one of the tellers participating in this annual international storytelling event that takes place the week before Thanksgiving every year.

AZ Rep - Phoenix - Stories of our Phoenix Families

Wednesday, September 10th

On Wed., Sept. 10, we celebrate stories of the families we were born into and those we create for ourselves. You'll hear stories about some of the families that have defined the Valley over the years, and stories of how the Valley has come to define some of its families.

This night is held in partnership with Phoenix Phabulous Experience and Phoenix Theatre. Attendees will get a chance to preview the Phoenix Phabulous Experience History Mural on display in the lounge.

Featured tellers:

Michael Barnard, Phoenix Theatre's Producing Artistic Director, Liz Warren, Director of the Storytelling Institute at South Mountain Community College and six others.

First and Last

Mark your calendars for September 20, 2014. Sean Buvala will be hosting what he believes what will be the first of many "First and Last" storytelling concerts.

In the First and Last event, we will have two (maybe three) storytellers share the very first story they ever told and also for them to tell the very last story they would choose to tell if they were unable to ever tell a story again.

First and Last Storytelling - we're very excited about this.

Tell, Tell, Tell - Tell Well!

I've posted this before, but it seems appropriate to do it again.
How do you become a storyteller, a better storyteller, a great storyteller? Heed the advice of seasoned teller Kim Weitkamp.

START NOW! There are lots of opportunities to tell here in The Valley of the Sun (and in Tucson). Search through the calendar section (and the ONGOING EVENTS listed below in green), Google "open mics in Phoenix", find as many places to tell stories as you can. This is the best way to get experience and hone your craft! Attend Guild meetings and get appreciations from your peers. Find a "story buddy" and arrange to meet on a regular basis and support each other.

You can't do it in a vacuum - but you could do it while vacuuming! The path is clear. "Tell, Tell, Tell - Tell Well"

The Boomer List - Timeline of a Generation

Last week (on "Thowback Thursday") I posted a short piece on FB about the time when the famous playwright William Saraoyan wrote a part in a world premiere play for me. This event turned into a story that I often use as a "historical" story - with a personal twist at the end.

My birthday is this Wednesday, September 3rd. I was born in 1948. That makes me a "Baby Boomer." Yes, we had a generation named for us. PBS has posted a Timeline of the Boomer Generation.

The years 1946 to 1964 define the post-war baby boomer generation, when the United States saw a spike in its birth rate. The American economy flourished and supported larger families, advances in technology made it easier to share ideas and culture, and space exploration took off. But the boomers’ era was also marked by great unrest. Americans born during this period were shaped by a world ravaged by a World War that included unimaginable mass genocide and the atom bomb...

Read more of this Boomer List of Events, not the least of which was a powerful catalyst for me, the beginning of the Civil Rights Movement. This will give you a small sense of the events that shaped our formative years, and gave us a rich history and backdrop for our own personal lives and stories - then think about your OWN generation's timeline.
