It Takes A Tribe…
Thanks to all who congratulated me in person and/or online. You have all contributed to me receiving this award, and my life as a storyteller.
This year’s NSN Summit was quite a whirlwind. Great breakout sessions and wonderful Fringe performances, but for me, as always, seeing friends and colleagues was the most gratifying. And yes, the anticipation of the Oracle Award Ceremony, and the ceremony itself, contributed to my joy. Accepting this award with so many of my peers in attendance was one of the great moments in my storytelling life!
My name was picked from the hat for the Slam, and although I wasn’t first, second, or third, I told a solid story and the audience enjoyed it. Many people thanked me for it afterwards and said they liked it. NOTE: after telling the story the night before, Loren Niemi gave me some requested feedback. It helped me tighten up the story and add a good through-line. Thank you, Loren, for your wise tutelage.
Which brought me to a realization: It takes a Tribe to raise up a Storyteller. I was getting an award for my service and leadership in the community, but there have been so many who have helped to “raise me up” in my journey as a storyteller, coach and teacher. From admiring so many, to becoming colleagues, I have been lifted. At several times during the weekend, I looked around and felt the energy of the tribe surrounding me.
When the ceremony arrived, Laura Packer and I wondered who would come to tears first. As she introduced me, she was the first, yet I was not far behind. Her heart-felt introduction was an award by itself, as her words made me feel great pride for my work.
I thanked Liz Warren, who nominated me, and those who wrote letters of support. Then, I began my story of Phillip. He was a sixth grader whom had difficulty in class at first, but in the end, told a good story, and used that story to “win” in a world that made no sense. My eyes welled up, and I had to stop and breathe several times in order to get the story out. My next award was the standing ovation I received from the crowd. It was another affirmation of my work, and the connection I have with this tribe.
I am greater than the sum of my parts. And those parts are every member of the tribe whom I learned from, listened to, talked to or helped in some way. “Let the Circle Be Unbroken” is our anthem. We sing it at the end of the awards ceremony as a tribute to each other, and to our storytelling ancestors who have passed away, and passed down their legacy to all of us.
Thank you all, past, present and future, who have raised me up to be the storyteller and leader I am today.

Connecting
 We call it Networking. I am not sure I like that word. I think it's more like, "connecting". Outside of tips about specifically crafting or telling, I think it's one of the most important tips I can offer.
Connect with the people around you; your friends; relatives; co-workers; people you meet every day and any day. Take time to listen and understand them. This will give you great insight into their story and who they are. It will help you later in crafting stories.
Connect with the people in your "tribe". As I mentioned in the News article above, these are the people that will help you in your journey. I don't just mean as teachers or coaches. I mean as colleagues who have "been there" and who can help you navigate the waters of our profession and business. They can link you to others in our tribe and be conduits to higher levels in your role as a storyteller.
Connect with those who have gone before you. Read about them, learn about them from your colleagues; watch videos of them and learn how they used story to energize and connect to their audiences.
It's all about how you connect with the world around you.
