Mark Your Calendars - Build Your Business with Better Storytelling
Monday - June 25th - 12:00 pm - 1:30 pm
Southwest Valley Chamber of Coommerce
289 N Litchfield Road, Goodyear 85338

Find, Craft and Tell Your Great 5-Minute Business Story!

The "elevator speech" is dead and your networking "commercial" won't work in the real world. In their place, you need a pile of well-crafted, time-adjustable stories of your work and purpose, each ready to be matched to the right people at the right time.

In this low-theory, high-activity workshop, you'll learn why you need to know the difference between anecdotes and stories. You'll experience your memories triggered to find your stories. Finally, be guided in the process to outline, craft and tell one of your newly-created stories with another person. You'll leave with customized and immediately useful content.

Taught by Sean Buvala of The Small-Tooth-Dog Publishing Group LLC.

FREE!
A light lunch will be provided but registration with the Chamber is required 623-932-2260. Lunch begins at 11:30 followed by the workshop at Noon.

Appreciations: How We listen and Observe

I have written about "appreciations" before, as both a teacher and coach, I have taught myself to listen and observe tellers with the intent of appreciation. What do I see or hear that I appreciate about the teller? Sometimes, in class, the important appreciation may be that the student "got through" the story, after much resistance and encouragement. I try to do the same with all the slams and open mics in existence. I try not to compare, or judge, but look for the good. It's not always easy.

This weekend, I found myself in a perplexing situation. I attended a performance that I was looking forward to. Several colleagues had said it was a great piece to see. As the performance began, I found myself "not liking" many of the elements of this presentation. I was falling back into the old habit of judging, and I seemed to look for more things that I didn't like.

During a break in the performance, I stood outside and wondered why I was so negative? Were my expectations too high? Was I expecting something different than I got? Why was I not enjoying myself or the presentation?

When they started up again, I prodded myself to "watch and listen with the intent of appreciation." I changed my attitude. I began enjoying myself and the performance. I kept finding things that I DID enjoy and appreciate about the people and the presentation.

This lesson was about my attitude and approach to the situation. There were still some parts of the performance that I was not enamored of, but I focused on the good. I did not have the opportunity to speak with any of the performers afterwards, but if I had, I would have given some of them my appreciations.

I think the more important part was that I walked away with a positive feeling vs. feeling grumpy because I didn't like everything.

So, remember - listen for appreciation!

Science Fiction Becomes Reality
Here's an incredible story! There are lots of other, similar stories out there. Hundreds of TED talks show many other technological "miracles", or even non-tech feats or skills that boggle the mind. The story about new glasses that allow color blind people to SEE COLOR.

Remember the TED talk by the blind man who can ride a bicycle? Fact-based stories that will amaze and perhaps inspire audiences. They might even compliment an ancient story about a flying carpet, or an invalid who is cured with a magic cloak. Think about the possibilities and the what ifs.

I wonder how far away we are from Star Trek's Transporter?

Don't forget to enable the volume!
