"Tellers of Tales" Founder Now Telling on High

Revered Arizona storyteller, Sheila Pattison, passed away Monday, June 23rd.
 
Sheila was beloved for her devotion to the art of storytelling. Her work as a librarian, storyteller, story mentor and organizer brought her respect and recognition throughout Arizona and around the United States.  
 
With Bernice Steinhauser, LaVonne Baker and Mary Ruth Shropshire, Sheila founded Tellers of Tales in 1979. Because of her passion for preserving stories and the storytelling tradition, she helped re-introduce Arizona to storytelling at a time when storytelling seemed to be a dying art. Sheila was a consummate planner and organizational powerhouse, launching storytelling groups, community concerts, story retreats, workshops and other events around Arizona. Over the years, her kind mentoring and encouragement helped launch several storytelling careers. 
 
Sheila suffered for nearly 10 years from the cascading effects of her tragic fall down a flight of stairs while she was on a hiking trip with her friends. 
 
She will be greatly missed by many storytellers and storytelling fans.

Women's Storytelling Soars
 Last month was the one-year anniversary for Out of the Box Women's Storytelling, curated by Anne McDowell. I was unable to attend then but was there last Saturday. What a great turnout and super event!

Anne does a fantastic job of gathering women with stories that honor their spirituality. She is a wonderful host and MC. There are door prizes, trivia and a great lunch with several different selections at the Dobson Restaurant at the Dobson Ranch Golf Course.

There's really good storytelling going on here, and a lot of camaraderie. 

They meet on the last Saturday (generally) of each month from 10 am till Noon and have a lot of fun. Mark your calendar for their next session, June 26th.

Mentoring for Self-Publishing with Sean Buvala
 Sean Buvala has a new Mentoring Workshop coming up in August - Mentoring for Self-Publishing. Sean has written and self-published several books. Publishing a book may not make you rich, but you can make a few extra bucks with it. And more importantly, it gives you credibility!

The Last Time I Saw Paris

Some of you (very few I think) may remember this Jerome Kern tune, some may not. But the message for storytellers is a great prompt!

Quite often, one of the best prompts for story creation is to think about firsts (see my tip on firsts). Let's take a look at the opposite...let's take a look at lasts.

Audiences are always interested in what special, difficult or strange things may have happened the last time you did something.

  • The last time I was on an airplane
  • The last time I ate meat
  • The last time I smoked a cigarette
  • The last time I worked at a regular job
  • The last time I told a scary story
  • The last time I told at a five year-old's birthday party (will definitely be the last time)
"Lasts" can be great stories by themselves, connect to more stories from the past or bring you up-to-date to the present and/or future. They can be funny, nostalgic, sad, tragic, or run the gamut of emotions. Combine them with a first time story and you've got a ready-made "bookend" structure. 
 
So,what happened the last time you saw Paris, or Rome, or your kids, or your parents, or...?
