The morning workshop will take participants through the entire story crafting process from beginning to end. Mark will use a tested "flow chart" technique to help you "map out" your story, your characters, their relationships and all the pieces in between.

Last Saturday, at East Valley Tellers, Judd Lee told a great story of the Poor Traveler and the Fishmonger, A Burmese justice tale. Judd is a master at showing the action of the characters. He used a great technique that day.
As the character of the Poor Traveler, Judd knelt down by the campfire, but with the voice of the Narrator, described his actions of "setting out his cooking equipment and unwrapping his utensils and food."
Then, he looked up at the audience. He continued to tell the story from kneeling on the ground, for just a moment, but his facial expression and voice was clearly coming from the role of narrator. He slowly rose up, and kept eye contact with the audience as physically he now transformed from the Traveler to 100% the Narrator.
This mixing of character action and narration was quite effective. We were drawn to the action of the traveler, and when Judd looked up at the audience, we knew he was the Narrator and his eye contact (and dramatic pause) held our attention. As he rose, we continued to lean forward attentively, listening and wanting to know what happened next.
The subtle difference between the character(s) and the narrator can prove to be immensely engaging.
Magnificent Maleficent! Do you love a good story? One with heroes and villains, love, jealousy, anger, delight, revenge and even more? One with fairies, magic, curses and potions?
Then go see Maleficent!
Disney has finally come of age in this marvelous new re-telling of Perrault's tale. Previously, Disney has been criticized for "sanitizing" so many stories in an attempt to make all things politically correct. Not so here. They have "un-sanitized" their own animated version and ended up with a most satisfying story and telling.
Angelina Jolie's portrayal and performance as Maleficent reveals all her emotions, and the depth of the transformations that her character experiences. She is both hero and villain in one. She shows us her vulnerability and how her anger turns to revenge, and eventually transforms several more times.
I am usually not a big fan of digitized monsters, but in this new incarnation of Sleeping Beauty, the trees, thorns and grass all morphing into demons to protect, defend and avenge our protagonists seems quite natural and familiar.
Thoroughly enjoyable and engaging. If you go, stay for the credits and the hauntingly beautiful version of "Once Upon A Dream" by Lana Del Rey. I have included it here, but when you hear it in the theatre, as the credits role, with the memories of the images just experienced fresh in your mind, it is even more beautiful.
