Arizona Republic Live Storytelling Night - May 31
The next Live Storytelling Night for the Arizona Republic will be May 31st, on the lawn at Postino Winecafe East 302 N. Gilbert Road, Gilbert. The theme - Lessons Learned: Stories of hard knocks, meaningful moments, tough truths and those awkward moments when you realize you’ve made a huge mistake.

Celebrate the moments in our lives that make us who we are. These are the times when we learn the lessons that will define us, or at least define the way we work, learn and treat others. These are the mistakes we make and the good choices we’re rewarded for. These are the educations we received in the streets, in the classroom, at the dinner table, on the barstool, in the woods.

Here's a tip for Story Creation

Dig out a photograph you have. Could be old, new, of you or a friend, or a place you visited. Or it could have nothing to do with you.

  1. Write down who and what you see in the picture, everything.
  2. Write down who or what may be there, but is not visible in the picture.
  3. Describe What is happening RIGHT NOW in the picture.
  4. Describe what happened BEFORE the photo was taken.
  5. Describe what happened AFTER the photo was taken.

Somewhere in step 3, 4 or 5, SOMETHING NEEDS TO HAVE CHANGED.
You should now have a beginning, middle and end...a story.

Origin: A variation of Cathy Ward’s lesson plan, “What Do You See? Visual Literacy and Story Structure” found in Sherry Norfolk & Jane Stenson's book, Literacy Development in the Storytelling Classroom, Libraries Unlimited, 2009.
