Join SMCC Storytelling Institute Director, Liz Warren this summer for another Irish Studies Abroad program of The Irish Storytelling Tradition. From May 31 to July 1, steep yourself in Irish culture and the tradition of Irish Storytelling. Meet and hear great Irish storytellers; learn, craft and tell your own versions of time-honored Irish tales.
Participants will spend a full month immersing themselves in the study of Irish culture and history while exploring and experiencing the rich and diverse heritage of Ireland. Using Athlone as a home base, students will make field trips to locations such as the megalithic monuments at Loughcrew and Trim Castle, spend several days in Galway, and take a boat to Clonmacnoise.
Enrolment is open to anyone, including folks outside of Arizona. There is NO LIMIT to the number of people who can register!

Thursday - Odyssey Storytelling in Tucson
This curated Storytelling event in Tucson is in it's 11th year! Six people are invited to tell ten minute personal stories on a theme in front of an audience. The stories are not read or memorized, they are told from the life experiences and creativity of the teller. The theme for this month is "JUVENILE HOUR".
WEDNESDAY April 10th - Folk Tales for Grownups
Community tellers will regale audiences with both time-honored and "slightly twisted" folk tales. The theme is Consider the Uses of Adversity. In the SMCC Library Community Room, 6:30 pm - 8:30 pm, it's FREE and open to the public!

Feast on the Street & Storytelling Saturday - April 13th
Feast on the Street brings the community together around a half-mile dining table in downtown Phoenix, transforming First Street between Moreland and Taylor streets into a pedestrian promenade in celebration of food and art in the desert. This free public event will host a mobile gardens parade, plant-based craft projects, a beer and wine garden and food-related storytelling.
The Arizona Storytellers Project will present a series of true, first-person stories at a special storytelling table where the public will be invited to sit and hear from a funny, charming and otherwise wildly engaging community teller. Five storytellers will share 5 to 8-minute stories on the topic of gathering around the dinner table. Engaging food stories will be told at 2:30, 3:00, 3:30, 4:00 and 4:30 at the Southwest corner of First Street and Roosevelt.
It Just Makes Scents!
I previously wrote about the forgotten senses, Now, let's talk only about smell. It just makes scents! The sense of smell is a powerful tool for storytellers and listeners. Smell can evoke some of the deepest emotions. Just look at the picture at the right. Without even uttering a word, we can conjure up aromas and memories in the blink of an eye.
And when it comes to words, there are many synonyms that we can incorporate to describe what comes to our noses:
Adventures in Storytelling
On May 10th, I will embark on another adventurous trip to England (with a stop in Dublin). I missed going last summer, but went for four weeks two summers ago. Bicycling and camping in England, The Netherlands and Belgium was a great adventure.There were many stories and storytelling along the way.
