The Story-Skilled Child - New Program from Sean Buvala

Long-time Valley Storyteller, Coach and Trainer Sean Buvala has a great new program: The Story-Skilled Child. Here's what Sean says:

In our unusual workshops, we focus on the oral-storytelling tradition to help parents create homes full of language. Homes full of language are an essential building block of literacy. For our Title 1 Parent Involvement programs: our “Story-Skilled Child” workshops, help parents engage with their children’s education while easily building literacy and math skills.

Our team creates memorable parent-involvement training that will leave parents wanting more. They will be eager (and ready) to apply the content to their own families from the very first workshop they attend.
Sean says that the workshops and training will mesh with any parental-involvement program, with or without the Title 1 options.

Tucson Tellers of Tales - Guild Meeting

Saturday, April 2nd - 9:30 am - 11:30 am
Unscrewed Theater, 3244 E Speedway.

Following a 15-minute business meeting, the group will get down to the business of telling stories. "April Fools: Fact or Fiction" is the story subject for the day, so there is lots of room for story inspiration here.

Bring a  personal, folk or fantastic tale of foolery to share. (And remember, if you don't have a story to share, please come to listen - we always love to have the support of friends in the audience.)

We expect to have quite a bit of fun with this particular story challenge. See you there!!

The Unscrewed Theater is a great place for TOT to meet. It is located across the street from The Loft Theater in a strip mall next to Walgreens. There is plenty of parking in the back of the building, and the entrance to the theater is next to the parking lot.

From Storytelling to Stars: An Exploration of the Elder's Journey
Monday - April 4th - 6:30 pm
SMCC Library Community Room

Sharon

Maya

Sharon Gilbert and Maya Davila will be sharing stories in a program about The Elders' Journey. We all know about the Hero's Journey. Sharon and Maya have extended this motif into an exploration of how we age, mature and transform into Elders.

As we explore the promise and challenge of the second half of life, we discover that one of the primary focuses of an elder's journey is to restore awe and wonder to a world that has forgotten them. Journeying from storytelling through the stars we realize the end becomes the beginning. Please join us for an evening of storytelling, tea and cookies and help us deepen this conversation of what it means to enter into an elder's journey.

Join them for this most interesting FREE story concert!

Beyond the Bones: Finding Creative Language for Your Story
With Mark Goldman

When we begin to craft stories, we start with the "bare bones" - the characters, plot, sequence of events. This workshop takes you beyond the bones to help you find creative imagery and language that will make your story more memorable and longer-lasting for your audiences. Discover how to unlock the creative language and images that exist inside of you; and learn how to turn simple phrases into compelling descriptions.
She couldn't see through the fog
might become... The mist was a sea of haze that clouded not only her vision, but her mind.

He was afraid
might become... His fear was like a vise that held him so tight in its grip he couldn't move.

She smiled
might become... The edges of her lips arched upward and spread a brilliant glow across the room.
This workshop is for both storytellers AND writers - anyone who wants to create more compelling images.

Talk Story...With Your Colleagues!

Do you have storytelling books on your shelf? Have you collected articles on Storytelling? Have you taken notes at workshops and conferences? Great! Fantastic! Now, don't forget one of the most important resources you have as a storyteller... people!

Do you have other storytellers in your community? Use them as a resource. Do you know tellers on FaceBook? Use them. Do you have access to other tellers through a list-serve or other internet avenues? Use them. Do you attend guild meetings? Use them... all of them as resources... often.

Let's talk story!
Most often, we attend concerts, conferences, guild meetings and listen to each other tell stories. This is great. Experiencing other tellers is one of the best ways to learn. But there is an additional option that we sometimes forget - just talking story!

Two weeks ago, several of us went to Tucson to hear Laura Packer tell stories. On the trip down, we talked about storytelling, tellers and stories. After the concert, we went to dinner and talked story. On the trip back to Phoenix, again, we talked story. Camaraderie and discourse are invaluable tools to glean information and insight from colleagues and friends!

The Pros Do It.
Here's another example, especially for newer tellers. Ask questions...the pros do it. If you are on Facebook, ask your friends and colleagues for their thoughts on a particular subject. Join in when others post questions or pieces concerning storytelling. Join a FaceBook "Group" for storytellers (there are many). Exchange ideas with other tellers or artists.

If you are a member of NSN, you can get access to the List-Serve Discussion Group. Quite often, one teller will post a request for a particular type of story and receive dozens of replies.

Margaret Read MacDonald

Dr. Margaret Read MacDonald has been telling stories for well over 40 years. She has written and published 90+ books or CDs. She was a librarian, a folklorist and has taught storytelling all over the world. She is a fountain of storytelling knowledge! And yet, last week she used the List-Serve to ask for help with identifying "transition" stories. She wrote:

A school is holding an assembly to help their students (elementary) think about transitions…moving on to another grade and class next year. Any ideas? Sounds like a logical request for matching stories, but I am stumped. I can think of ways to torque some of my tales to sort of fit this theme. But there must be just the right story out there that I am not remembering.
One would have thought that after years of experience, she might have "all the answers". Still, she reached out to the community and her colleagues for help, and she got it. The mark of a true professional!

So get out there, connect with your colleagues and when you can...Talk Story!
