Five Star Feast

Thursday - March 26th 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm
Five Start Feast at Community Christian Church

Enjoy the ambiance & atmosphere of a Five Star restaurant---& a simple, nourishing meal that would be a veritable feast for the 2.2 billion people who live on less than $2/day. Our nutritious but minimal meal will include five courses---“amuse-bouche”, salad, soup, a main course of beans & rice and a simple dessert.

Storytellers will tell stories about food from around the world and musicians will entertain us while we dine.

We invite participants to make a donation similar to what you would spend for a dinner at an upscale restaurant as a fundraiser for outreach ministries at Community Christian Church that feed the hungry and refresh the thirsty (Interfaith Housing Emergency Lodging Program (I-HELP), Paz de Cristo and Humane Borders).

Don't Wait for Carnegie Hall!

We all know the old joke about the young man with a violin case, who seems to be lost on the streets of New York, asks an older man, "How do I get to Carnegie Hall?" He replies, "Practice, practice, practice!"

The sentiment is true. In order to perform in the larger venues, one must practice, and be practiced. So here's a tip...start small.

House concerts, like the one I did with Pam Faro this last week in Colorado, are a perfect way to get known and practice your craft in front of an audience. These house concerts are different from a guild meeting or story circle, because you are not just practicing with friends, you are performing!

Unlike renting a theatre, or paying for a breakout room in a hotel, or finding a coffee shop that works, the costs are little or nothing. You might need some extra chairs (ask people to bring their own folding or "camp" chairs). You can provide snacks or drinks, or ask folks to BYOBeverages. You can charge a small fee ($3-$5), and break even, or perhaps donate some of the funds (charge a little extra) to charity (a great incentive for people to attend).

It's easy to promote, use e-mail and social media to invite friends, and friends of friends. You could do the whole evening yourself, or have several tellers. You are in control.

As you can see from the photo on the right, its different from performing on a stage. The audience is "up close and personal." This is also a good way to practice "reading the crowd". You will definitely know whether they like your telling when they are only five feet away!

If you start small, in both numbers and space, you have little to lose...and a lot to learn!

TSA - Different Strokes
At the Phoenix airport, the TSA screener proclaimed, "Leave your belts and shoes on, leave EVERYTHING in your bag, leave nothing in your pockets".

The "pocket" thing is always a hassle, but if you prepare for it by bringing a small ziploc bag and put all your pocket stuff in it BEFORE you approach the security gate, it's easier to manage. The belt and shoe thing was a welcome and comforting statement as there is usually a guy in front of me who has spilled his coffee and I ALWAYS step right in it, while my pants are inching down my hips!

A little different at the Denver airport. First, as there is one "terminal" that then leads to all the concourses, there is only ONE security section that everyone goes though. But here, it's a different story. The TSA lady is announcing to us, "Take off your belts and shoes; take out any computers or laptops; (and my favorite) NO HUMUS OR PEANUT BUTTER".

What? No humus? No peanut butter? What's the deal here? Do they think someone will try to hide a weapon embedded inside a jar of that gooey stuff? Or do they believe a terrorist will try to blind the pilot with a shmear of ground peanuts or chickpeas?

It just seemed strange to announce that these two spreadable foods were verboten! Hey, what about regular butter, cream cheese or even jam? In any case, I had neither, so I didn't have to worry about that. And there was no spilt coffee or water or tea on the floor...but my pants were still inching down my hips. Oh well.
