New Book from Lorraine Calbow

The Community of Lightbearers:

Seven Stories of Reclaiming Wonder and Delight

One of the co-founders of the SMCC Storytelling Institute, Lorraine Calbow, has recently published another book.

She has previously pwritten three nonfiction books--This Little Light of Mine, Seeking the Light Within, and Smarly's Adventures--and co-authored The Art of Fine Whining or How Lori Lew Wrote Her Own Fortune Cookie with Neil Weiner, PhD.

Now, her love of people's stories, metaphors, and parables led her to reconnect with her own inner child of wonder and delight. The Community of Lightbearers: Seven Stories of Reclaiming Wonder and Delight is her first novel.

LynnAnn Wojciechowicz, another co-founder of the Institute, said this about the book:

This uplifting book is loaded with truths--shared as insights by main characters and as lessons in the numerous fables, folktales, and myths succinctly sprinkled throughout the book.

Out Of The Box Storytelling

Anne McDowell has organized another event:
Out of the Box Storytelling - Women Storytellers.

A place for Christian women to get together to hear and tell of the wonders that God has done in their lives or (with permission) in the lives of others. This is a fun, exciting new way to hear six 8-10 minute personal, uplifting, faith-promoting stories about the wonders of God, and enjoy a delicious brunch! They offer fun, laughter, and a chance to win door prizes!

It's at Dobson’s Restaurant at Dobson Ranch Golf Course in Mesa from 10am - 12 Noon.

Storyfind

Saturday - March 26th from 1:00 – 4:00 in PAC 740.

Storyfind is a monthly workshop designed to help storytellers build community and deepen repertoire. Each session will start with a short reception to welcome new participants to the community. Come network with many valley storytellers and participate in this month's workshop.

Create your own pourquoi story – led by Liz Warren!

This month’s Storyfind is devoted to creating Pourquoi stories. Pourquoi means "why" in French and porquoi stories are origin stories – little myths – that explain why something is the way it is - like why a snake has no legs, or why a tiger has stripes.

Liz will supply templates and short “biographies” of desert animals and plants as the raw materials for the new stories. Don’t miss it!

Journeys Storytelling Concert at Whole Life Center

Six Word Stories

Can you tell a story in six words? According to storytelling lore, Hemingway did it with the ad at right - For Sale: Baby shoes. Never worn.

It's a great exercise to see if you can distill your story down to just six words. I have done this with my students with some amazing results. Sometimes, it takes a little coaching to help them focus in on the essence.

Previously, I have spoken about describing your story in ONE SENTENCE. Now, see if you can make it even shorter. Here are some examples:

Played golf. Boss won. Kept job. (I think that was Karen Chace)
Beauty loves Beast. Curse is lifted.
Simpleton plants beans. Giant is defeated.
Princess defeats dragon. Ditches obnoxious prince. (The Paper Bag Princess)
Friends finally visit. Go home tired. (Mr. Wiggle and Mr. Waggle)

Try it yourself. You may need to use a thesaurus. See if you can distill the essence and use only six words.
(P.S. If you get down to seven or even eight, you're doing great!)
