Five Star Feast
Thursday - March 26th 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm
Five Start Feast at Community Christian Church

Enjoy the ambiance & atmosphere of a Five Star restaurant---& a simple, nourishing meal that would be a veritable feast for the 2.2 billion people who live on less than $2/day. Our nutritious but minimal meal will include five courses---“amuse-bouche”, salad, soup, a main course of beans & rice and a simple dessert.

Storytellers will tell stories about food from around the world and musicians will entertain us while we dine.

We invite participants to make a donation similar to what you would spend for a dinner at an upscale restaurant as a fundraiser for outreach ministries at Community Christian Church that feed the hungry and refresh the thirsty (Interfaith Housing Emergency Lodging Program (I-HELP), Paz de Cristo and Humane Borders).

Out Of The Box Storytelling
Women Storytellers
Saturday, March 27th - 10am - Noon (doors open at 9:30 am)

Anne McDowell has organized another event:
Out of the Box Storytelling - Women Storytellers.

A place for Christian women to get together to hear and tell of the wonders that God has done in their lives or (with permission) in the lives of others.  This is a fun, exciting new way to hear six 8-10 minute personal, uplifting, faith-promoting stories about the wonders of God, and enjoy a delicious brunch! They offer fun, laughter, and a chance to win door prizes!

It's at Dobson’s Restaurant at Dobson Ranch Golf Course in Mesa from 10am - 12 Noon.

Questions Can Ground You in the Story

Master storyteller Donald Davis has said, “Storytelling is the way we move important pictures from our head to someone else’s head ... and you can never spend too much time describing the scene if you want people to see your picture.”

When I was a Psychodrama therapist, the major portion of what we asked clients to do was to “play out” a scene (using members of the group) that would show us part of the “story of their life.” People who had never seen this process often wondered, “How can you do that? How do you know what actually went on; what the other people in their lives were like; what everyone said?”

We developed a series of questions to ask the client to get the information we needed. I have found that these questions can help storytellers ground themselves and help them to actually see the characters and the scene – before they begin to craft the story. The answers to them can then be shared in the story in describing to the audience, the People and Place.

Here are the questions.
How old is this person?
What do they look like?
What kind of work do they do?
Describe their personality in just a few words.
Describe their relationship to (each other person) in just a few words.

Where does the scene take place?
Describe what is here; what does the space look like?
Is there some object here that is significant (to each of the characters)?
Describe the object and why it is significant (see another tip about using significant objects).
Try it out. You can certainly expand on these questions. They should give you a solid grounding in the back-story of each character.

Answer all the questions for each PLACE and each PERSON. Now you should have a head full of images that you can describe to the audience ... a story!

Let's Rally 'Round Lady D
Friends and colleagues. Our community of storytelling here in the Phoenix Area has been growing stronger for many years. In addition to great storytelling, we have come together for some great causes, and now is another one of those times.

For many years now, Diana Monell (aka "Lady D") has been battling breast cancer. She had been in remission, and now it has re-occurred for a third time. She has many old and new bills, and needs the help and support of our community to raise funds to assist with her massive medical expenses.

Your help will be gratefully appreciated.  If you cannot donate, Diana says, "I accept prayer, it works!"
