The SMCC Storytelling Institute presents master storyteller and mime, Antonio Rocha in a magical workshop. He will lead participants in the exploration and creation of transitions during the telling of a story with a creative and eloquent approach. Antonio will teach how to identify areas where the story changes mood, location and direction. These are "delicious" moments where your style of telling can shine . . those places where one can create eloquent works of art with either gesture, sound and even stillness. These transitions give the story momentum, moving the plot forward while keeping the story deeply connected to its essence.

Fairytales are usually interpreted and analyzed, but in her work worldwide, Laura has learned to focus on the exceptional benefits that occur as a result of profound engagement with imagination, mindfulness and awakening the capacity for reframing one's story and creating the ground for possibility.

The Whole Life Center at Shadow Rock is offering monthly two-hour storytelling workshops with Liz Warren this spring, as well as quarterly Storytelling Nights.
In these workshops, you'll learn essential skills of storytelling as you find, structure, develop, and tell a story from your own life that you might share at our Journeys: Storytelling Nights or just for your own family and friends.

Just a Pinch of Salt We've all been there. The story is crafted; we've rehearsed it over and over; we've told it to friends, at a guild meeting, or in a story circle. But, like tasting a cookie or a sip of soup, there's that niggling feeling that, "It just needs something else."
I love cooking and food metaphors. One of my favorite tips is Salt to Taste. And colleague Sean Buvala wrote a great little book called Measures of Story.
So what do you do when there's that little voice inside that says it's just a "little" off? Well, maybe that's exactly what it is - a "little" off. Maybe it doesn't need a huge overhaul or complete makeover. Maybe it just needs a "pinch " of salt... or something.
Maybe it just needs an additional sentence. Maybe just a different word here ot there. Perhaps it needs a well-placed pause, or a slightly different expression on your face. What would happen if you stopped to smile - or frown? Just a tweak here and there.
Go back to your recipe. Check the basic ingredients. Are they all there? What's the story about? Are the characters and the events all there, in the right proportions? Have they been mixed well, with the correct flavorings and feelings? Maybe the story needs to "cook" or just "simmer" a little more. Does the sauce need to be reduced a bit, or do you need to deglaze the pan with a bit of sweet or bitter wine? Perhaps the dish just needs to cool down a bit.
Each time we tell a story it's like cooking up a recipe. Maybe it's soup, or Stone Soup; or cookies or The Gingerbread Man; or steak, or Like Salt for Meat. Whatever it is, we make it just a little different each time.
Next time you tell (cook) the story, try adding just a splash of vanilla for fragrance and sweetness; or a dash of cayenne to spice it up; or just a pinch of salt to bring all the flavors together.
What would your story taste like then? Serve it with pride and gusto!

My good friend, colleague and storyteller Regi Carpenter is offering a fantastic storytelling course! Regi is a J.J. Reneaux Grant Recipient, a Massmouth Grand Prize winner, has told at Jonesborough and many other festivals, and teaches storytelling at Ithica College.
The exploration and expression of the self can be fraught with fear and anxiety. We are so often concerned with how our stories will be met by the world that we silent our voices. This class lets us release the destructive voices of our inner critics and connect with our full creative power and possibility. Then we share it – OUT LOUD. Through simple spoken and writing exercises we will explore the full range of our human experience.
