Sad News - Diane Wolkstein Now Telling On High

We have lost one of our Founding Mothers.

Diane Wolkstein, world-renowned storyteller, folklorist, mythologist and author of many books for children and adults, died following emergency heart surgery on January 31st while on a trip to Taiwan working on her most recent project, the Chinese epic story of The Monkey King or Journey to the West.

Diane was the author of 23 books of folklore and performed to sold-out crowds throughout the world. What set her apart as a storyteller was her performing gifts, as well as the depth of knowledge and research she devoted to the stories she told. Her collection, The Magic Orange Tree, was the result of numerous visits to Haiti during which she recorded stories told on porches and in late-night gatherings.

New York City's children gathered at the foot of the statue of Hans Christian Andersen in Central Park to hear Diane tell stories every Saturday for more than forty summers.

I met Diane at last summer's NSN conference and had a quite lovely lunch with her. She will be missed.

A more extensive obituary can be found here.

Bye Bye Cassie

Congrats to Cassie Cushing who won Sean Buvala's Small Biz Story Slam on Saturday, and then retold her story at the Open Mic at Terra Java on Sunday. Cassie will be leaving for Berkley California on Thursday and her pressence will be missed here in the Valley. We wish her the best of luck with her storytelling and coffee business in her new surroundings. But knowing Cassie, she will make her own luck! Hopefully, she will return often to grace us with her stories!

Timpanogos Bound. . .

I am headed to the Timpanogos Winter Conference in Provo, UT this Friday and Saturday. If anyone wants to come along and share a room/car let me know.

Pick Three

No, I'm not talking about the lottery! Many new tellers are fearful when getting up on stage. Their eyes glaze over as they encounter "a sea of faces". Even in a small group, the idea of everyone's attention on you can stop some tellers cold. So here's a tip to overcome that fear.

Pick Three. Yes, just before you get on stage, pick three people in the audience to "tell" to. Maybe people you know, or maybe you just see a welcoming face, someone who is leaning forward in their chair or smiling at you - a friendly face. Pick someone on the left, in the center and on the right. Then tell to each of those folks. Switch back and forth between all three. Pretend that those are your three best friends, and you want each of them to enjoy your story fully. Make eye contact with them.

The result is that everyone around that person will believe you are telling to them!
