Aaaarrrggghhh!

Well, some little gremlins had invaded the server where this newsletter resides and began to nibble away at the database and coding behind the scenes. For several hours on both Saturday and Sunday, I was on the phone with a well known Internet hosting service which shall remain un-named (and I don't mean Go Mama).

The online staff on the other end of the line kept insisting that it was MY coding that needed to be changed/fixed. I, of course, was staunch in my assessment that, "Nothing had changed!" on my end. On Friday it was fine, then on Saturday it wasn't. I had mad NO CHANGES to anything, yet they kept saying I needed to change my coding.

Monday morning, still not working, so I posted a "plain vanilla Newsletter" and tried to glue some of my hair back in place.

So...here it is, Tuesday morning; and it seems that the system is working now. I use the word cautiously, and keep looking over my shoulder to see if I am being followed by any of those little, but powerful, cyber gremlins!

Arizona Storytellers: Wintertime Tales

Kudos to Megan Finnerty of the Arizona Republic on the third annual Winter Tales event at the Arizona Bilmore! A whopping 450 people attended and heard the best of the best tellers on this eve of tales about crazy, whacky and delightful holiday stories.

Featured tellers included
Laura Rutherford, Doug Bland, Rachel Egboro, Kathy Cano, Sean Buvala, David Kravitz & Eileen Spitalny, Stuart Rosebrook, Megan Finnerty and Liz Warren.

A great end to the year and a great tribute to Megan and all the tellers who have participated!

You Are Special

Congrats to Sandy Oglesby who is VERY SPECIAL, and has just published her first book, You Are Special Just The Way You Are.

It's a delightful story of Phibian the frog who sees all sorts of different animals and wonders if he will ever be like any of them. Each step along the way, his mother reinforces the same title message to him, that he is special just the way he is!

Kudos to Sandy and her new book that is a sure winner and teaches a great lesson to kids (and adults). The book includes an arts and craft project that goes along with the theme of the book and is a great way for parents to interact and with their kids as they continue to instill this very important message.

In the words of Captain Peter Quincy Taggart from the movie, Galaxy Quest:

The Nature of Creativity
Friend and colleague, storyteller Kevin Cordi, Ph.D. has posted an interesting response to one of his students who seemed to be "waiting" for Kevin (as a teacher) to inspire and motivate her to be creative.

Even though his words are thoughtful and I concur, I know Kevin works hard to create an atmosphere that encourages students to play, feel free and be creative and innovative. Sometimes students refuse to participate fully. As therapist/writer Barry Stevens once said (and I paraphrase), "You can't push the river."

Read the post here.

P.S. - Kevin has recently published Playing with Stories (Parkhurst Brothers). I hope to be reviewing it in the next few weeks. I know it will be great, Kevin is the master at using play to teach storytelling. If you want to get a head start on me, you can order it here.
