It's Cyber Monday - Hey, let's be careful out there!
Mazel Tov! On November 18th, Mark Compton and Makoto Miyamae tied the knot after a relationship of 19 years! It was a joyous wedding ceremony, presided over by Sandy Oglesby. Friends Joyce Story and Mark Goldman offered up stories for the happy couple. Congratulations and wishes for a long and happy union. L'chaim!
P.S. The day was also Sandy's wedding anniversary!
What's Wanting? An old English expression meaning "What do you need?" That's' what I want to know, concerning storytelling.
I am planning a workshop gathering for the beginning of the year, sometime in January. I want to present what you need, so much like a build-a-bear experience, let me know what's wanting.

First Friday, December 1, the Arizona Commission on the Arts and Palabras Bilingual Bookstore will host a public reception with the participants of a Spanish-language creative writing workshop series led by local writer Ofelia Montelongo and sponsored by the Arts Commission's AZ ArtWorker initiative, which is funded by a grant from the Emily Hall Tremaine Foundation.
Montelongo and her students will read works developed during their eight weeks learning together.
Readings will be mostly in Spanish.

Storyfind is a free monthly storytelling workshop series presented by the faculty of the SMCC Storytelling Institute. The workshops are on Saturday afternoons from 1:00 – 3:00 in PAC-739 at South Mountain Community College.
How did this happen? How could it be? The teenager had no idea. She only knew what she had been told. Yet deep down in her heart she composed and she sang the Magnificat.
Join Sylvia in a workshop dedicated to exploring and understanding the ultimate Bible story.
Sylvia Torrey is a Wisdom-Biblical Storyteller. She began telling biblical stories to the youth groups who were under her tutelage, and from there to the adults. Having heard stories routinely from her father, she was no stranger to the art or storytelling. After an undergraduate education in nursing, and a graduate degree in divinity, Sylvia was introduced to the Storytelling Institute of South Mountain Community College. Her cumulative talents, forged through experience as a registered nurse and as an ordained minister, have found expression here. Sylvia has performed at various venues in Arizona and Ohio. She has also taught Storytelling courses at the Institute and other MCCCD locations. Not neglecting the family tradition of storytelling, she frequently tells to her two daughters, and three granddaughters.

Stories of Light Entering Into the Darkness of our Lives
Community Christian Church keeps this tradition alive by presenting storytellers from diverse faith traditions who gather together each December to tell stories and light candles in a show of unity and hope. "Winter's Light" is a joyous, multi-cultural, inter-faith storytelling event for the holidays.
Discovering Another "P" Friend and colleague Layne Gneiting is a storyteller, adventurer and Leadership Trainer. Last week, he posted a request for suggestions about what to include in an Adventure Journal. Some suggested physical aspects, like a pocket for a pen or a pocket for ephemora (I had to look it up. it means: things that exist or are used or enjoyed for only a short time, usually written or printed)
People
Who were the people you met? Describe them. What were they like? What did you discover?
Place
Where were you? Describe the place(s). What was it like? What did you discover?
Problem
Was there a problem? More than one? Rate the difficulty. How did you deal with it?
What did you discover?
Progress
What was the progress of this part of the journey/adventure? Did you learn from a Mentor?
How did you change? What did you discover?
Point
What are your thoughts about today? What were the highlights/lowlights? What did you discover?
As I reviewed these, I thought - something's missing. Then I realized that these, and even Campbell's Hero structure focus mostly on the problem and how to overcome it. They were lacking something: happiness, delights, joy - PLEASURE - Perhaps a sixth "P".
Storytellers often describe the joys or delights of the protagonist, but I have never seen it stated as an essential or important element to include in a story. So, I am suggesting that storytellers add this P to the list. At least as an element to consider.
Pleasure
What made you (your protagonist) happy; smile; joyful; want to dance or sing?
What was the tiniest, seemingly insignificant thing that gave you (your protagonist) pleasure?
What did you (your protagonist) discover?
This is not so much a new piece of the structure or flow of a story, but I think it is an essential component of story that as tellers, we should be aware of and consider.
