NSN Members SAVE on 2015 Conference Registration Next year's NSN Conference dates are set! July 30 through August 2, 2015 are the dates for the tribe to gather in our NEW home in Kansas City MO. Exploring the PATHWAYS where storytelling can take us!
FOR NSN MEMBERS ONLY (That means you need to JOIN NOW) Back by popular demand is our PRE-early-bird offer to register for the full conference at the lowest possible price through January 12, 2015 (does not include lodging, meals, pre-conferences, master classes, final Sunday concert, additional special events TBA later). Conference registration for non-NSN members will not open until 2015 and at a $100 higher rate.
Perhaps most important is by registering now, you have the opportunity to stretch your payment over 6 months. NSN is looking for an Interim Executive Director!
One of the primary accomplishments at the fall NSN 2014 Board meeting was the approval of a part-time Interim Executive Director position in Kansas City. This is an addition, not a replacement, to our current staff, in order to accelerate progress with our partnership building and fund development in Kansas City, while the Woodneath historic home (NSN’s new office) is being renovated.

YarnBOWL Storytelling Challenge Wednesday, November 26, 2014.
Valley teller & MC Dan Hoen Hull announced that starting this month, there will be a YarnBOWL Storytelling Challenge on the last Wednesday evening of each month. There will be a $25 prize for the best story!
The YarnBOWL Storytelling Challenge will be held 8:00 pm at Lawn Gnome Publishing & Bookstore at 905 N 5th St Phoenix, AZ
To qualify:
Come armed with your TWO best 5-6 minute stories. There’s no theme. This is all about your finest yarns
First eight people to sign up get to compete. Sign up starts 7:30 pm with Becky at the store register.
Two rounds of four storytellers.
Final round of two storytellers to square off in the YarnBOWL.
Winner, determined by the audience judges, will get something good. We promise.
Yarnball: funny, inspiring, motivating, brutal, gripping and always living.
Lawn Gnome Publishing is located at 905 N 5th St., Phoenix, AZ. Donations will be accepted in order to help develop a storytelling venue in Phoenix. All of our shows are all ages and uncensored. Our used bookstore will be open during the event. Refreshments are available for purchase

Every day I wake up and say, "I am a published author!" This is truly because of Ted, his friendship and efforts. I had often dreamed of writing a book. Having it become a reality is an amazing feeling. I am also very grateful for the many colleagues who have praised my work and made me feel welcome and accomplished.
Odyssey Storytelling in Tucson - Moving Their Venue Thursday, December 4th
This curated Storytelling event in Tucson is in its 12th year! Six people are invited to tell ten minute, personal stories on a theme in front of an audience. The stories are not read or memorized, they are told from the life experiences and creativity of the teller.

Doors open at 6:30 p.m., Show starts at 7:00 p.m.

Myths and Folktales of Norway with Harriet Cole Saturday & Sunday, December 6 - 7
EXPERIENCE NORWAY at the Musical Instrument Museum!
A whole weekend of Norwegian music, food, crafts and STORIES.
Hear the stories of old told by the hearth to keep warm on the long, dark nights of a Norwegian winter. Local storyteller Harriet Cole, an instructor at the South Mountain Community College Storytelling Institute, specializes in the Norse sagas and performs throughout the country. Join her for a taste of the Nordic folktales with four themes you won’t want to miss!

Done? OK, here goes.
Not ready to go full blown on incorporating a personal story into a traditional one? That's OK. You can still make a small link, and enhance your telling of a folktale or fairy tale.
Recently, I told the story of the Two Brothers. It's about their love for each other, and how they sacrifice their own gains to give to the other. Instead of merely beginning the story, I made a reference to my own family, I told of how I did not have any brothers, but did have two sisters. I spoke of how, in our early years, we had a great deal of sibling rivalry. Somehow, when we all got past the age of eighteen, we began to truly show our love for each other. To this day, we are all very close.
This type of personal intro can make an instant bridge and help you connect to the audience even before you start the story. It told the audience a little about me, helped them get in touch with their own feelings regarding family, and set up the premise of the story about two loving brothers.

This piece is a great PRIMER on storytelling and the two genres! Laura gives us great perspectives on both types of tales and, in the end, asks us not to draw a line in the sand between the two, but perhaps build a bridge instead. SHe has an example of her doing that within the blog. Well done!
