Step Outside The Box (of your comfort zone)

In David Novak’s workshop last Saturday, he reminded us that “rehearsal” is not merely “practicing repetition” of your story. It’s really a time of discovery and experimentation. Experimenting with different performance aspects may also give you more insight into the content of the piece, which may lead to other changes. Especially in the beginning stages of the story, play around, be spontaneous and creative.

With this concept in mind, I offer a few tips I have elaborated on in previous newsletters:
In addition, you may want to revisit my blog post on "Practice, Practice, Practice!"

Try out new ideas, new concepts, new packaging. Try a nine-sided box.

David tells Jack and the Beanstalk
Too bad you missed it…I’m glad you did!

If you missed David Novak’s workshop last Saturday in Phoenix, I’m sorry for you, but I was glad for me! The small group of seven tellers meant that David would spend more time with each of us individually. And time well spent it was!

Master Teller and Coach David Novak started with an exercise showing us how “stories talk to each other.” This lead into each teller sharing the tale they had brought for coaching with David. Then, one-by-one, David spent focused time with each of us on our story.

Each coaching effort was different, and geared towards the teller and the tale together. David’s observations would prompt questions that would guide the way for each teller to discover new insights and options for their story and performance.

In conclusion, David told a marvelous and captivating rendition of his “Return to Storyland”, as he demonstrated all of the aspects of telling that he had elaborated on in each mini-coaching segment. It was a masterful day!

If you have the chance to attend one of his workshops or performances - don't miss it!
