Go Over The Top. . .Then Dial It Back

Have you ever asked someone to repeat what they said, or speak up a little? Then you have to ask again because you just weren't hearing them? Then, when you ask a third time, they look at you sternly in the eye and yell at you? This is not conducive for friendly conversation, but it can be a great tool for practicing your story.

It's always easier to cut back than it is to pump up "just a little." Actors do this all the time. In rehearsal, they go overboard, they exaggerate, they make everything bigger. Then they dial it back a notch and begin to use the concept of containment to express the importance of the moment in the intensity of their performance, vs. the volume or largess

Storytellers can do this too, and see what happens in the process. It's always best to use a "story buddy" or coach when trying this out. Rehearsal is not just a time for repetition and memory. It is a process of discovery. You will begin to understand more about your story and characters as you expand to the Nth degree, to see what happens. Then you can dial it back and compare the different options.

And for those new to telling in a performance setting, you can begin to learn about how you come across to the audience. Self evaluation is always difficult, even for many experienced tellers and performers. Feedback from your buddy (or watching yourself on video) can be a powerful barometer that can help you hone your performance to its best!
