Donald Davis Workshop - Place & People

It's no secret why Place and People are the first two "Ps" in Donald Davis' rubric for crafting stories. This last weekend's two-day workshop with the Master Teller revealed rich levels of stories and telling.

The simple use of focusing on "Place" as a begining for a story brought up not only the places that participants had experienced, but many of the emotions connected to those places. The addition of "People" attached to those places multiplied those deep feelings exponentially!

The workshop offered ample time for each participant to explore many sides ot their stories by just starting with those two aspects. Appreciations and sharing added to the understanding of each teller and their tale. Kudos and thanks to Donald Davis and to Liz Warren for hosting!

Where are You on the Spectrum?

Not too long ago, there was a discussion on FB about where you stand on the spectrum between story"teller" and story"performer".  Back in January, one of my tips was to try going "Over the Top" in your performance style. Here's one more way to practice and discover:

Ask yourself, "where am I on this line?

TELLER--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------PERFORMER

Wherever you are is OK. "As an exercise", try moving as far as you can to one side or another. On the TELLER side, see how "conversational" you might be able to be (a la Katherine Windham). On the PERFORMER side, see how "outrageous, over the top" you could be; costumes, props, music, voice, etc.

It's an "exercise". It's a tool to use to clarify what may or may no work for you. Explore each segment of your story from different points on the line. As Karen Langford-Chace says, "I wonder if. . ."

Coaching Works
In addition to attending workshops - don't forget coaching as as an effective tool towards bettering your storytelling. My hat is off to Regi Carpenter, Sean Buvala and Karen Langford-Chace. I recently sought out each of them to coach me on different aspects of my work. The results from each were both insightful and powerful. Thanks to each of you!
